International Medical Corps (IMC) is headquartered in good ol' sunny, beachy Santa Monica, CA, and Abby and I had a great first meeting at their headquarters of how OHMY and IMC can work together in a positive way and to show them what OHMY was about. We even showed them the Tsuru shirt (designed by Hiroko Kobayashi), of which all proceeds go towards the Japan Relief effort that IMC is relentlessly providing.
What's so great about IMC is that not only are they an admirable 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to relieve the suffering of those impacted by war, natural disaster and disease, which they do by delivering vital health care services that focus on training AND helping devastated populations return to self-reliance, but they are EFFICIENT and STRATEGIC about it! In Japan, they had a team of medical and logistical consultants that went immediately into the impacted areas and assessed what was in critical need and what areas there were holes in which IMC could fill the gap.
For instance, IMC was on site in Japan within 48 hours of the earthquake and tsunami disaster, and one of their assessments was that telecommunications was down and causing mayhem in the disaster stricken areas. Hospitals and clinics could not speak to each other. Disaster relief teams and law enforcement were sent to wrong areas due to the broken telecommunications systems.
From that critical assessment, they immediately contacted a global telecommunications company and set up telecommunication systems back in disaster stricken Japan so that medical, disaster, and law enforcement teams could communicate and coordinate plans, ideas, and save lives.
Our first meeting with IMC was a success and we are encouraged by the dialogue we had about the relief in Japan they are providing, as well as the collaboration of our two non-profit organizations. We are so excited to be partnering with IMC and to be donating 100% of Tsuru T-shirt sales to IMC's amazing efforts in Japan Disaster Relief!
